This seminar will focus on both foundational techniques and scenarios applicable to area search, HRD, and tracking/trailing K9 teams to improve their overall performance. The seminar will focus on large area searches, utilizing the xxxx acres of a private hunting lodge.
The teams will get the most benefit if they have a Trained Final Response (for area/HRD) and the dog has been imprinted on HR. Scenarios will be included as deemed appropriate to the K9s skill level.

HRD (intermediate to advanced):
- The latest training drills designed to keep your dog motivated and sharpen their commitment to odor.
- Search strategy for large areas.
- Large source odor and complex odor scenting problems.
- Final response training and odor imprinting will be provided as needed.
- Various search scenarios as suitable to the level of the K9.
Tracking/Trailing Track (Intermediate to advanced):
- Develop dog’s problem solving skills
- Teach handler to read dog
- Build dog’s motivation for the “find
- Increase length of tracks

- Bill Dotson – Bill has over 40 years of experience in Search and Rescue. He has trained dogs in trailing, area, disaster and HRD. He is an experienced veteran of countless missions, both nationally and internationally from disasters to homicides to lost soldiers in the jungles of Panama.
- Joan Brehm has over 20 years experience in K9 SAR. She is currently the Sergeant for the K9 Operations Team with the McLean County Emergency Management Agency in Illinois. She has trained and certified four SAR K9s (a Redbone /Lab mix, a Redbone Coonhound, and two Golden Retrievers). Her K9 partners have certified through the North American Police Work Dog Association, the International Police Work Dog Association, and the National Narcotics Detector Dog Association in a variety of disciplines, including avalanche, wilderness area search, disaster search, land and water human remains detection, and trailing. She has participated in hundreds of missions over the years with her K9s across the country and has also served on several international missions.

Due to the nature of this class, handlers are limited to working only ONE dog and must elect for only ONE training track: either Area Search, HRD, or Tracking/Trailing track. It will not be possible to have two dogs in different venues.
